Flee!!
Wow - I made it from deep in Clermont to downtown Orlando in 26 minutes. But I wasn't late for Rocky Horror - NOT a show you want to be late for.
The show we did was great. The audience sat on their hands with their mouths shut, and yet we got a standing ovation. It was a good show, but laughter kinda helps. Shawn and Brandon came, and I just love my little boys so much, but I barely had time to say hello. After promising to pick up Shawn and take him with me to visit Brandon in Palatka, I had to bolt. I was kinda irritated...
...until I got to Theatre Downtown to meet J for a show. Really, you should go see Rocky Horror. The rumor is that they've been extended to next weekend, so you have the time. It's a show that really is more entertaining if you're a Rocky fan or know people in the cast, but I'm sure it would be damn good regardless - although I suspect Theatre Downtown would be a very difficult place to direct a show. You know that line in The Producers, "You've heard of theatre in the round? Well I invented theatre in the square - NOBODY had a good seat!" That sort of applies there, so staging will be a challenge in any show, but they did a great job with it nonetheless. All (um...both?) the people I know were wonderful - Jeff Lindberg was the narrator, and he's as much a charmer in real life as he was on stage. It takes a special man to coerce a volunteer into taking his clothes off onstage. (Ah, to that end - if you're going to take your clothes off onstage, make sure your underwear is not full of holes.) The dude playing Frank was stellar. The phantoms, though, rocked my face. There were a couple of girls I really thought were great, and I kept wondering where they found these people - they were all pretty perfect. And I'd never go overboard with the compliments to someone's face because if it was me, it'd make me uncomfortable, and I assume the same for everyone else - but there's nothing to stop me from writing it! Josh was totally the best phantom - his movements and facial expressions were perfect - not a big surprise from a guy who's known to specialize in movement and facial expressions, but still terribly entertaining to watch. And, as anyone who knows my strange affliction for boys in eye makeup would understand, he looked unusually hot, as did all the boys in makeup - ahhh. Watch for the fire eaters, and stay in the theatre for intermission. There were scenes I knew about that I still wasn't fully prepared for (I love shows that ensure that you'll never be able to look at someone the same way again), and we got some love from the phantoms (thank you!). All in all, an exceedingly good time. And to the audience for knowing the callbacks and dressing up, thank you - it makes the show all the more entertaining.
I think J and I are going to see The Incredibles, and I'm very excited about that. Saturday, noon - time to get out of my pajamas!
Weird coincidence of the day: In a rush to get from theatre A to theatre B, I couldn't put on a very extravagant costume for Rocky. So I went with the tight jeans and green army jacket thrown over a tight white wifebeater and black bra look. And onstage, Josh was also in a wifebeater...and black bra. It's one thing to walk into a room and a girl's in the same dress as you. To walk into a room and a dude is wearing your same sexy-cool trashy outfit...totally disorienting.
